Write an essay of 1500 words in which you analyze Anna Letitia Barbauld s poem The Rights of Women in terms of language (figures of speech, imagery, rhythm, etc.) showing whether or not the poem represents women poets sensibilities, attitudes, and tendencies during the Romantic period 1780-1830. Read the poem in your poetry anthology, Romantic Writings: An Anthology. (Vol. 1 .p.5).

Student Notes:

It will be useful first of all to read the genre guide, Approaching Poetry, and then listen to AC 02, Band 1 which contains an introduction to reading Romantic poetry. You will find major help for your answer in Chapters 2, 4, and 7 of your course book, Romantic Writings.

Students may start by explaining the cult of separate spheres and the cult of sensibility during the Romantic period, and then whether or not women poets sensibility is
expressed in Barbauld s poem. It is important to show how language is used to convey the meaning of the text.
