Following is an outline of the main points to consider in studying a work of (visual)art. Remember that not all of these factors will be equally important in every case; it is up to the student or scholar to decide what has the most bearing on the understanding and interpretation of the work and to leave no stone unturned.
The Whats
Vital statistics: Artist s name, title of work, medium (i.e material of which work is made), dimension, date.
Content: what you carefully observe: subject (if any) , setting (if any), accessories, actions being performed, etc. The same care in observation is just as fruitful applied to abstract works.
Iconography: the language of the images, or the symbolism of a work.

The Hows
Technical means: Scale ( how large or small is the work?) medium ( Oil on canvas )
Composition: Does it fall into a definite shape? Is that shape formal (centered and symmetrical?) or informal (asymmetrical?) Is it dominated by horizontals and verticals or by diagonals or a combination? Or (especially in abstract works) does it have a circular, spiral or cyclical direction?
Line, Shape, Color and Space: The basic elements of composition. How are these used.
Space: if the work has some reference to natural space, what is the arrangement of ground plane , black, plane, picture plane in relation to each other? Is the composition crowded?
Color: what hues has the artist chosen? At what valued and intensities does he use them?
Light: What kind of light is used: Specific source? Warm or cool Contrasted with dense shadow?
Surface: what is the a) apparent and b) actual surface texture?

The Whys
Pesonal Factors: Artist s training (with whom did he/she study)? Influences ;what personal joys or tragedies may have affected his or her subjects.
Social Factors: what were the political and economic realities of life during his or her career? Did they change? What sort of government was in power? How did it effect patronage and the general attitude towards artists? What were the relationships of the various classes to each other? Which were in power?
Patroage> was the work commissioned or did the artist have total freedom of choice? Did he do the work for himself or with a larger of his patronage?
