Aving a child with Trisomy 21 My Lot in Life

Your Lot in Life is a short research assignment that will require you to place yourself in the position of a person who is dealing with a particular nonnormative life circumstance (i.e., a specific a?lota? in life).

Your Lot in Life is that you are pregnant with a child with Trisomy 21 also known as Down syndrome and you have the child with Down syndrome.

To write the 3-4 page paper, first you will need to investigate your lot by finding and summarizing 2 empirical studies (journal articles) related to your topic that were published in a psychology or sociology journal within the last 10 years. Information from these sources must be presented in your paper so that the reader is aware of the specific research conducted ( in other words, why was the research conducted?, how was it conducted?, what were the results?, and what were the implications?) You must also use 2 reliable sources (book a not including your textbook), reliable websites, etc) in your paper. Your paper must be a balanced presentation of information from these sources. In other words, no one source should dominate your paper. I encourage you to think about how the lot might affect you personally and to choose research that addresses the particular questions that interest you. For example, if you receive the lot, a?Your child dies of a rare genetic diseasea?, you can decide which aspects of the life event you want to research and address. For example, you could focus on forms and patterns of grief, on the effects of the death of a child on your marriage, or on the long term stress of coping with a childas chronic, fatal illness. For the next step, you will need to include a real life section that researches how individuals experiencing these life circumstances may find help or support. To do this, you may contact by phone, mail, e-mail, at least two community or national agencies or support organization. What services does this organization provide for people with this lot and how easy or difficult was it to locate? You must provide specific information about your experience in contacting these sources. Also, how helpful would you expect their services to be? Your paper should conclude with ideas about how friends, family members, professionals, or even strangers can support individuals experiencing these life circumstances

I encourage you to write from your own perspectivein other words, assume the role of the person dealing with that lot. For example you can write the paper as if it is a journal, a long letter to a family member, or a letter to the editor of a newspaper. What it must include are (a) a clear statement of the lot, (b) a summary of empirical research including substantial information from the other sources you have located, (c) information about community support, (d) a conclusion about how society (friends, etc.) can respond with this lot, and (e) a reference page. Please note that you MUST cite your references WITHIN the text of the paper when applicable (such as when you are discussing the empirical research, the community agencies, books, websites, or any other source). Citations MUST be formatted using APA or MLA.

All papers must be double-spaced, 12 point Times News Roman font (default font on most computers), with one inch margins. In addition, your paper should be carefully crafted, edited, and proofread for spelling, grammar, and clarity. You may use either APA or MLA formatting.

This paper MUST be in your own words. Use quotes MINIMALLYonly when it is not at all possible to put information in your own words. All Information presented, including information from empirical studies, must be in your own words. A significant reduction in points will result for the unnecessary or excessive use of quotations. Be careful that you do not plagiarize. Plagiarism is a form of cheating that involves presenting as oneas own the ideas or work of another. That includes unreferenced information from the internet and other published media (books, newspapers, journal articles, etc.).
