Introduction
Explain what your brief is.
1. The organisation & how it functions1.1 Are you working in the private, public or not for profit sector? Plus a little bit of general information on your organisation ag. business purpose, size, location etc.
1.2 How is your organisation structured? (a diagram would be useful here). What are the management functions and management style within your organisation?
1.3 What is the predominant culture within your organisation? (you could link your work to Handyi??s model)
1.4 How does the HR function fit into this structure? How is HR delivered eg. centralised, devolved and or outsourced? (you could underpin your discussions to HR models such as Ulrich and Tyson and Fell)
1.5 How does HR contribute to the workplace?

2. Business Performance & the dealing with the changing environment
2.1 What are the key contemporary issues faced by your industry or sector? (you could draw on PESTLE here ie. what are the main influences relating to political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental). What about the impact of current or forthcoming legislation (UK and EU) which may impact on the business operations?
2.2 How does the business monitor and measure performance? Examples of tools could include benchmarks of profit, financial and non-financial data eg. balanced scorecard; Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and Human metrics eg. employee engagement surveys, levels of turnover and skills audits.
2.3 How does your organisation use this business performance data to help manage change? You should link your work to change management theorists such as Lewin and Kotter etc.

3. The positioning of your organisation
3.1 What is your organisationi??s market position? You could use Porteri??s 5 Forces model to summarise your organisationi??s market position and competitive context here.
3.2 What are the key demographic, social and technological trends affecting your organisation i?? now and in the future? You might want to use a PESTLE analysis here and draw on data sources relevant to your organisationi??s operations eg. ONS (Office of National Statistics; OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development; UK Government Departments (eg. BISDepartment for Business Innovation and Skills); UK Census; UKCES (UK Commission for Employment and Skills; CIPD Labour Outlook and other sector specific data sources eg. Care Commission; Health & Safety Executive.
3.3 Describe the nature of globalisation (what does the term mean in theory and in practical terms?) and explain the international factors affecting your organisation. This could be supply chains, workforce, disruption in other places where you have interests, raw materials etc.
3.4 Describe government policies, EU regulations and other legislative factors (possibly in other countries eg export regulations) which apply to your business and how it is affected by them.

4. The role of HR in your organisation
4.1 Describe the role of the HR function in business planning within your organisation. At what level does HR contribute to business decision making i?? is this at strategic or operational level? For example, what is HRi??s involvement in developing strategies for workforce development, reward, resourcing and talent management? Do HR get involved in developing strategies or is their role more concerned with implementation?
4.2 What sources of data could HR refer to, to help inform business performance planning? You need to explain why these sources of data are relevant to your organisationi??s context and how they help to inform HR practice. For example, HR might be responsible for carrying out skills audits to help inform future recruitment and talent management programmes; HR could consult sector specific and/or national data sources to monitor trends relevant to the business operation which could lead to targeted recruitment campaigns, redundancy; outsourcing, benchmarking pay and benefit packages eg. UK Census; CIPD and Labour Outlook; Croner Pulse;

5. Moving Forward
5.1 What recommendations would you make to respond to the context in which your organisation operates? How have prioritised these responses?
5.2 What are the potential cost implications? You do not need to be specific here i?? an indication of general cost considerations will be adequate.
5.3 Describe how you would communicate your recommendations for maximum effect and to ensure that you persuade others to take your ideas forward. You need to explain who you would communicate your ideas to and why ; what type of media you would use and why and the timing you would
