Case Study of The Rape and Sexual Abuse Counselling Service

ASSIGNMENT 50%
A case study of no more than 2,500 words, of a specialist counselling service. Hand in date is from Friday 3rd February to Friday 17th February 2012 (deadline).

This case-study assignment should be carried out in small groups, and written up and submitted separately.

You may choose a service that interests you or that you have some experience of. You should start thinking about what service to approach early on in the course. Do not leave this until the last minute. You will work in small groups related to the service you are interested in. One or two of you should interview one of the counsellors involved in the service using an interview schedule devised by the whole group. Think carefully about the division of responsibilities in the group, and the questions you need to ask as your assignment is largely based on this interview material.

Your assignment should provide a brief description of the service, its aims, who staffs it, where it is located, how accesible it is, its perceived and actual target population. Include any relevant contextual information. You should critically explore the counselling approaches used by the service and the rationale for their use. How does the approach enable the service to meet its stated aims. Consider also staff selection and training and whether the service delivers what it claims to deliver or whether it in fact delivers something different. Does the service monitor its efficacy? How is staff supervision managed? If so how and when? Also consider what use the service makes of this feedback. How does the service monitor its own efficicacy, on what basis?

You should specifically address what you regard as the positive and negative attributes of the service, the implications of your criticisms and any recommendations that you may wish to make. Include some comment on your own position in the evaluation process and consruction of the assignment. Your work should integrate current counselling literature with what you have learned about the practice of counselling within the service, from the service leaflets, web site and your interviewee. This is an opportunity to bring to bear questions about a?evidencea of good practice in counselling.

The marking criteria we use for this assignment comprise the following: Clear statement of service aims; Clear indication of sources of information; Integration of interviewee quotes, counselling and any other appropriate literature; Focused evaluation; Identification and exploration of issues important to the service; Full exploration of appropriateness of particular counselling approach and how it operates in practice, specifically to meet service aims; Critical appraisal of information gained and literature used; Reflexive commentary.
