Client study ; patients culture (The Experience of Health and Illness)

This assessment takes the form of a 3000-word essay. You will be expected to draw on an interview and observations that you did with a patient/client in year two practice placements to produce an account of how particular cultural and social factors might have contributed to their experience.
As far as possible, you should use information that you have acquired directly from the patient/client and his/her carers as a way of understanding their experience.

Provide accurate and up to date references using the Harvard referencing system.


Describe the patient/clientas background with reasons for choosing the patient/client.
Identify a specific patient/client and provide a vivid but non-judgemental description of his or her family, cultural and social background (include employment, ethnicity, education, housing etc). Give reasons for choosing the patient/client e.g. aspects of your clientas cultural/social background that interest you.

Provide a brief outline (no more than 200 a 300 words) of the basis of their need for health care (e.g. they may have been admitted to the ward following deterioration of long term condition such as asthma or dementia). Highlight only those aspects that may have implications for their cultural and social health and well-being.

State the similarities and differences in two writeras definitions of culture. The definitions should be from nursing or sociological publications. Say why the definitions are relevant to health and wellbeing.

State how you gathered the evidence especially the evidence you collected directly from the patient/client. Describe how the interview was conducted. Describe the setting where the interview was carried out. Comment on whether the patient/client was responsive in the interview. If possible provide excerpts of the interview in the appendix.

Identify important cultural issues from the patient/clientas perspective. Provide examples using the patient/clientas own words. Identify the important cultural or social needs for your patient/client. Support your points with summaries and quotations of your clientas words from your interview and your observations. Provide references in the essay to show these summaries or quotations are from the interview.

Discuss how the culture of the patient/client may or may not match the culture of the care setting with support from relevant literature.
Discuss whether the cultural viewpoint of the patient/client conflicts or not with the healthcare settingas cultural viewpoint. Use relevant literature to discuss the differences or similarities between these two viewpoints.

Summarise strengths and weaknesses of care provision (related to culture) making suggestions for improvement.
Make comments about how effectively the health care setting met the cultural and social needs of your client. Make recommendations about how the health care setting could improve meeting its patient/clientsa cultural needs.
