The paper must be in APA format and include a cover page, abstract, discussion, conclusion, and references. The Written Exercise paper should go beyond the obvious, be written at a graduate level, and must be at least 1,000 words in length. These assignments must be scholarly written and must follow the current American Psychological Association (APA) format and style (e.g., doublespaced, indents, etc.) and include the following: a title page, abstract, discussion, conclusion, and references. Students must use at least three resources to support their position. Remember, all resources including, but not limited to, journals, magazines, and/or books must be properly cited using APA style. Also use the following book. Haddow, G. D., Bullock, J. A., & Coppola, D. P. (2014). Introduction to Emergency Management. Waltham, MA: Elsevier/Butterworth-Heinemann. Chapter 6 and 7 out of this book.
Module 4 introduced a number of concepts, principles, and best practices relative to response and recovery. In particular, Chapter 6 of the assigned text discussed the importance of coordination and cooperation among all levels of government, and a number of important resources were introduced, including the NRF, NIMS, and ICS. Moreover, Chapter 6 highlighted important disaster events, focusing on the governmental response.
As the authors of the assigned text explain, responding to disaster events is the most visible activity for federal, state, and local emergency management agencies. Politicians, the media, and the general public will often rate the success of the emergency management community by how well it performs during the response phase of a disaster. Along these lines, according to the authors, a successful disaster response requires a strong command and control system as well as good communication and coordination among all agencies involved.
Assignment Directions:
Select one of the following disaster cases introduced in Chapter 6: the Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster, Hurricane Katrina, the Oklahoma City Bombing, or the 2011 tornado that impacted Joplin, Missouri. Using the assigned text, the additional resources introduced in this module, and the Internet:
