Introduction

The topics of this lecture are challenging to many people. It is hard to know exactly how much evidence of spiritual sensitivity one can show without being offensive to others. To assist in this effort, this lecture will explore the commonalities across religions: that of prayer and fruit of the Spirit. These staples of spirituality, when shared, demonstrate the epitome of care. The fact that these are challenging topics is exactly what makes it important to study them in this setting. Without spiritual care, patients miss one of the components of care they need. As Dr. Paul Brand said, Fear is often introduced into the process of dying by the very technology and hospital environment meant to help. It is the special privilege of the dedicated [health care professional] to be a human interface that facilitates peace and preserves hearts untroubled(Komp, 1992, p. 14). It is important to consider how the health care professional can meet spiritual needs and what measuring instrument can be used to determine his/her preparedness for giving this type of care.

The type of work that a caregiver must perform on a daily basis is varied and challenging. Much of it is routine, but some aspects of it are unpredictable. At times a patient or client may need spiritual care or comfort. One patient might clearly want to pray or to be encouraged, while another might not want anything of the sort. This can be very awkward, especially if the caregiver is unclear or uncomfortable with spiritual matters. It is essential that a good caregiver maintain a sense of compassion for the one receiving care and keep the focus on that persons needs in order to give the quality of care that is expected.

Spiritual Assessment

Knowing the patients openness to spiritual care is only part of the issue in care. A major portion is the caregivers self-assessment in spiritual matters. Many health care professionals are reluctant to give spiritual care for fear of offending a patient or even creating a litigious situation. They do not want to find themselves in trouble officially or unofficially for any blunders they might make. It is essential that they assess their readiness to give spiritual care; it is important for them to realize that spiritual care does not necessarily imply any religious connotation. Certainly, some people will want a technician, paramedic, radiologist, phlebotomist, nurse, or doctor to pray or recite a comforting scripture verse, such as Psalm 23:1a The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want...A but for the most part, that is not expectedA, much less required. Nonetheless, health care professionals have many opportunities to exhibit valuable spiritual care in their ongoing duties.

Types of Prayer

One topic that arises when discussing spirituality is prayer. Prayer means different things to different people. For some, it is silent meditation. For others, it is the process of reading or reciting a prayer written by another person. Prayer can also mean a conversation wi
