Ealth & Healing in Cross Cultural Perspective

1.What is indigenous psychology? Give an example

2.How does culture help define what is normal or abnormal in a specific group of people? Give an example.

3.How can spirit possession actually empower people?

4.What is Susto? What did Rubel and colleagues find to be the main cause of it in the group that they studied?

5.What is the hot-cold theory of disease?

6.Why is biomedicine part of the natural disease causation ethnomedical system?

7.Discussion Question a Transcultural Psychiatry
Chapter 6 discusses Transcultural Psychiatry. The author provides several case studies of culture-bound syndromes. Give an example of a culture-bound syndrome either from the text or another source. Do you think this is a a?reala disease? Why or why not? If you were a biomedical practitioner, what would you recommend for treatment of a patient claiming to suffer from this disorder?

8.Discussion Question a Ethnomedical Knowledge
On page 244 the author explains how people are now trying to incorporate indigenous (ethnomedical) knowledge and beliefs into public health campaigns. The author uses Contagion Theory as an example for helping people to avoid the spread of HIV in some parts of Africa. Give another example of how ethnomedical knowledge could be used in a public health campaign in another part of the world or even targeted at specific groups in the U.S. You can choose any condition that causes health problems.

9.Discussion Question a Culture-bound Syndromes
Does American culture predispose people to specific culture-bound syndromes? Can you think of an example? To get you started a take a look at 10psyche-t.html?pagewantedall

Ealth & Healing in Cross Cultural Perspective

Please answer the 4 questions below in paragraph form from the sources that I attached (Chapter 2 and Chapter 3)

1. Describe one of the cross-cultural adaptations from chapter 3.

2. What is one way that a clinically applied anthropologist could help a patient receive better health care?

3. One of the main issues addressed in cross-cultural health is the concept of cultural competency. What does cultural competency mean to you and what do you think could be done to improve this area of health care? You can discuss material from the book, your own experiences, or anything else that you think is relevant.

4. Another big issue is cross-cultural health and is evaluating and promoting the physical and metal health of children. In the textbook there is a section on page 51 about children from the non-dominant culture being classified as mentally ill at school, but defined by an anthropologist to be completely normal at home. Do you think this is a common phenomena in public schools and what could be done to help these children?

Ealth & Healing in Cross Cultural Perspective

Use Chapter 9 to answer the questions below in paragraph form. All of the chapters have been uploaded to #554471

1.How can ritual heal?

2.What is a placebo? Give an example of a placebo (or nocebo) effect in biomedicine. Also give an example of a placebo (or nocebo) effect in another type of healing system.

3.How do humans use culture to deal with stress so that they donat become overwhelmed or sick (at least most of the time)?

4.What is metaphor theory? Give an example of how metaphors are used in healing.

5.Placebo effects are one of the main foci of this chapter. Some people in biomedicine argue that they have no healing value at all are completely inert substances. Others argue that placebo effect (with or without the pills) is one of the major factors in all types of healing including biomedicine. If you believe you will heal you are more likely to heal. Do you think that most of biomedicine is just convincing the brain and body to heal itself or do you think that placebo effect is overemphasized and drugs and other treatments are effect in most people no matter whether they think they will be cured or not?

Ealth & Healing in Cross Cultural Perspective

Write an original paper based on a non-western healing system. The paper should be 3-5 pages in length and based on at least three sources. You can use your textbook as one of the sources if relevant. Your paper should include the following sections:

Description (20 pts)
Describe the non-western healing system. What is the system based on and where does it originate. If the origin is not known a at least list where it is thought to originate. What type of diseases does it treat and/or heal.

Practitioners (20 pts)
Who are the practitioners and how do they achieve their position (for example a formal training, born into it, a specific experience, etc.)?

Worldview and Integration with Biomedicine (20 pts)
Based on your study of this non-western healing system what are the two most important cultural concepts of the world-view of patients of this system that would need to be understood by biomedical doctors if they are also treating the same patients in US hospitals. For example some cultures do not recognize the same symptoms as treatable health problems and donat seek biomedical care for them.

The other sources should be first hand materials from books, journals, or other academic sources. Do not use Wikipidea, About.com, or other second or third hand sources.

The paper should include a work cited or reference page.
