(1) Compare and contrast the health of the nation and determinants of health in the last 100 years (identified in your text, chap. 1) with those of today (identified in Health, United States, 2007 and the 2007 National Healthcare Quality Report).
(2) Differentiate among the causes of health care disparities identified in your text, chap. 2 with those in the 2007 National Healthcare Disparities Report and Race, Ethnicity, and Healthcare (Tutorial).
(3) Describe the nursing implications of the three reports for the government and workplace setting.
(4) Include implications for both staff nurses and nurse practitioners.
(a) What would be the role of the nurse leader in influencing health policy to improve health care quality and reduce disparities related to the government?
(b) How could you influence the government to change health policy related to mandatory reporting and improve access?
(c) How would electronic records improve health and reduce disparities?
(d) What policy changes are needed in your health care setting to improve quality and patient safety?
(e) How could nurse practitioners influence health policy in their professional organization and workplace?
(f) What could staff nurses or nurse practitioners do locally in your communities or states to influence health policy for a particular issue? (These are some suggestions, but you could approach these areas of influence with other topics important to you.)
