RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT (RD): RESEARCH SKILLS and STRATEGIES (RS) FINAL REPORT
A©Renata de Pourbaix, Fall 2014
INTRODUCTION
The Research Skills and Strategies (RS) assignment is part of Research Development. For this
assignment, you are required to complete a search for information on a focused topic and to
evaluate your findings.
DUE DATE
The final RS Report is due on Nov. 24, before 11:25 a.m., although earlier deadlines may be
announced for some portions of the work.
EVALUATION
Evaluated as part of Research Development (RA/RS assignment) for 10% of the final course grade.
PURPOSE
To show your ability to apply course work in a practical academic situation. You will be showing
that you can choose a topic, create a topic focus and write it in an appropriate form, search for
information of two or three different types, academically evaluate the items that you find, and
present this information appropriately and completely.
PROCEDURE
i · Choose a subject (general topic) related to any of the following:
o an aspect of the overall course theme of cultural literacy
o your RA newspaper article, magazine article, academic journal article, recreational
book, or textbook
i · The subject may be directly or indirectly related. For example, if your RA newspaper article
was about an election, then your subject could be: elections, voting, systems of government,
etc.
i · Within the subject, determine a topic. Using the example of voting, your topic might be about
voter turnout, voter registration, etc. Then create a more focused (specific) topic, which will
be written in the form of a research question and a thesis statement .
i · Using appropriate search tools, find:
o 1 book containing information on the focused topic, using the Carleton University Library
catalogue/SUMMON tool
o 1 academic journal article on the focused topic, using a database accessed through the
Carleton University Library catalogue/SUMMON tool or an online search
o 1 additional item a your choice of type, for example an extra book, an extra academic
journal article, or something different, for example a conference report, a government
document, an Internet article (an online-only article) on the focused topic
i · Create an annotated bibliography on the focused topic. This means:2
o List the 3 items (book, journal article and your choice of third item) in APA bibliographic
format
o After the reference for each item, in sentence form explain how the item relates to your
focused topic. Is it exactly on the same topic, or is it one aspect of the topic? Does it
provide additional details, background information, theoretical information, or what?
o After the a?relationa? explanation, explain how you found the item (search details). For
example, for an Internet article, include the name of the search engine(s) and the search
keywords you used, and how you made the choice from the resulting hits in the search.
o Next, write a paragraph evaluating the item. In other words, explain how useful the item
would be for an academic essay on your focused topic and why it would or would not be
useful. Academic evaluation includes a consideration of:
i § Currency (date) a is it current, timeless or out of date?
i § Authority a is the author an expert in the field?
i § Coverage a how the item relates to your focused topic (details, overview, or what?)
and thus how it might be useful.
i § Objectivity is the item or source objective (not biased)?
i § Publisher (of a book)/ Sponsor or Owner (of a website) a is it relevant to the validity of
the item as a source for an academic essay?
i § Any other relevant information.
i · Finally, write a concluding paragraph explaining the advantages and disadvantages of each
type of item (book, academic journal article and third type of item if different from the other
two) in terms of how easy it was to find, and how appropriate it will be as a source for an
academic essay.
PRODUCT and FORMAT
i · Submit your assignment in the RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT (RD: RA/RS) section of cuLearn in
the RS Report assignment space (no attachments).
i · The information shown in Bold below remains part of the assignment that you post.
i · The information in italics below needs to be replaced by your actual information.
