Eology i??Volcanoes&Earthquakei?0 Assignment15

Go to Weekly Lectures, open the folder for Week 8 and watch the lectures posted there.
Go to Weekly Readings, open the folder for Week 8 and read Earthshaking Science, Chapter 7.
No online video this week! Instead youll watch several animations and videos on the website below.
Go to the following website:

What is this website? Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology. What does that mean?

This is a large group of Earth scientists from universities and other research institutions across the country. They are working together to better understand earthquakes, and to make their data available to other scientists around the world and to the general public.

And see that little logo on the right side of the webpage, the one that looks like this:

NSF Logo

This is the logo of the National Science Foundation. This is a government agency that funds scientific research. Which means that everything you see on this website is a result of YOUR tax dollars at work. And as a government agency, part of their mandate is education. So lets take full advantage of the money our country puts into education and explore the resources this website provides.

1. Spend some time exploring the website on your own so you get a feel for what it contains. Make notes of specific items you find interesting so that you can report them in your homework assignment or on the Discussion Board.

2. After youve explored the site on your own, go to Educational Resources. Scroll down to Teaching About Earthquakes and check out the first two sections, Animations and Video Lectures.

3. Watch the animations! Watch the videos! They are short, educational, and, I must admit, rather dry. But still interesting!

Write a brief summary of one animation and one video. You can choose from any of them, as long as they cover topics related to earthquakes or tsunamis.

Your summary should consist of 1-2 paragraphs describing the content covered in the animation, and 1-2 paragraphs describing the content covered in the video. Pretend you are describing what you learned to your grandmother what concepts were covered, how were they illustrated, what did you learn?

In addition to your summary, describe at least one thing you found interesting while exploring this website on your own. Your description should be about 1 paragraph in length and should explain what you learned, why it was interesting, and how it relates to earthquakes or tsunamis.

Compose your work in a word processing program (Microsoft Word, etc.) and submit it to me through Blackboard as Assignment 15.
