Epic Journeys LIT 2310
Professor Andrew Cotto
Final Paper Assignment
As stated in the course description, LIT2310 will:
…consider the epic film and the epic novel along with the original poems to see how the ancient poems inform our modern perception of heroic action and character. Looking at contemporary values and comparing them with classical values of nation and hero should help us to gain insights into our culture and other national cultures.
With this objective in mind, your final paper will be a reflection on our semesters study with an emphasis on comparing heroic qualities from our heroes with contemporary versions of such behavior.
Heres what you do: Pick any three of our Heroesfrom reading materials or movies(one has to be Aeneas from The Aeneid, one from Homeras a?Odysseya?-Odysseus, movies: a?The Warriorsa?, a?O brother, where art thou?a? ). Identify and explore a heroic trait (different in each selection) then compare such to contemporary culture. Do said qualities have more or less value? Are they as common? Ultimately, what does this say about who we are as a contemporary society? Have we evolved or not as a culture?
You will follow the 5-paragraph formula.
Introduction: Define hero. Explain the common use of such in narratives throughout history. Mention how looking at such narratives, with a focus on heroic qualities, can help us gain insight into our own culture. Drop the thesis (name the narratives you will discuss and how specific heroic traits dont need to name them here can inform our understanding of our own society).
Each of the three body paragraphs will follow the same formula:
Topic Sentence name the narrative, character and heroic trait.
Supporting sentences show the character in action as it relates to the trait; show this trait at work in contemporary society; reflect on what is says about who we are.
Conclusion: Repeat thesis. Explain, as a whole, whether you believe society has become more or less heroic over time and why. Be thorough and definitive.
REMEMBER: WHEN MAKING AN ARGUMENT, THE MORE DETAILS THE BETTER. AVOID FLUFF OR SUMMARY. ASSUME IM AWARE OF THE CONTEXT. AVOID THE USE OF IIN ACADEMIC WRITING.
