Essay 3 from the list film review (Islam studies)

Each essay must be a minimum of 2,000 words and a maximum of 2,500. Word count must be included on the final page of your essay submission. The film review is to be between 1,000 and 1,500 words.

Essay 1 (Book reviews: Carl Ernstas and Mona Siddiquias book) a (300 points) Within this review you should outline the general subject of the books. Summarise what the authors are saying on the subject and why. Express your thoughts on these book and try to grapple with the reason why the authors have written these book. What was the most interesting thing you learned about the bookas subject? Did the authors hold your interest? Do you agree or disagree with their thesis point? Compare a few similar themes between both books
Essay 2 a (300 points) Choose a question from the following list and write an essay on the modern debates and challenges surrounding this subject. Your essay can use a historical or contemporary perspective;
1) What are the current critical questions surrounding the Quraan and its interpretation?
2) Can Islam live at peace with other faiths?
3) How were the roles of men and women prescribed in the classical/formative period of Islam and how do they compare with current discussions on gender, sex and sexuality? Conflict or complement?
4) Discuss some of the issues surrounding Muslims in the west and how do they compare to Muslims living in Muslim/Arab countries?
5) Is Islamic Law compatible to the modern world?
6) What is political Islam? Discuss some of the contemporary debates surrounding this vision of Islam from diverse viewpoints.
7) a?Islamic art has often given a breathing space to Muslims to be creative.a? Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Discuss.
8) Discuss some of the various forms of Sufism and compare it to political Islam forms.
Essay 3 a The Film/Documentary Review (300 points) a Choose one of the movies/documentaries that we watch in class and critique its religious themes and how these themes are portrayed in the movie. What type of questions has this movie raised for you?
