Listening and speaking are key components of communication. Developing the listening and speaking skills of English Language Learners will help them to be able to read, write, and understand academic content. What strategies can you begin to incorporate in your classroom that will help develop listening and speaking skills for English Language Learners? In this weekas Learning Resources, you read about the various purposes for listeninga listening to repeat, listening to understand, or listening for communicationa and the importance of helping students understand and produce discourse. You can use specific strategies in order to develop listening and speaking skills for English Language Learners and for all students.

For this Application assignment, you will review a videotape of your own lesson or activity and focus on strategies you can use to develop listening and speaking in your classroom. Watching this lesson or activity will provide you with an opportunity to reflect on your current practice so that you can identify new practices you can implement to develop your studentsa listening and speaking skills.

Review your videotaped lesson or activity. As you view, consider which parts of the lesson or activity posed, or may have posed, listening and/or speaking challenges for English Language Learners.

After reviewing the lesson or activity, consider the following:

What insights did you gain by watching your videotape?
What supplemental resource(s) would be needed in order to enhance the listening and/or speaking skills of English Language Learners during this lesson or activity? Create a supplemental resource (e.g., a worksheet, an activity, a graphic organizer).
What word, sentence, and/or discourse level strategies from this weekas Learning Resources could you have implemented in this lesson or activity to increase the listening and/or speaking skills of English Language Learners?
How will the strategy you implement promote listening and speaking skills for the specific learner or group of learners you brought to mind?
How will you informally assess your studentsa listening and speaking skills as you implement the strategy? What listening and/or speaking behaviors in your students will help you determine the strategyas effectiveness?

Be sure to include specific reference to your videotaped lesson or activity in order to support your rationale.
An explanation of how will you informally assess your studentsa listening and speaking as you implement the strategy
Your responses to the above prompts along with the supplemental resource(s) you created
