is a scenario essay: Gladys separated from her husband soon after the birth of Joshua and is now divorced. She rents a 4 bed roomed house from a housing association. Her two sons, her father-in-law and her granddaughter also live in the house. Gladys does not work as she is the full time carer for her father-in-law and her granddaughter. She cannot afford a car but she does smoke roll-ups.

SUMMARY/OVERVIEW:Summary/Overview In this unit you will explore the role of the nurse in providing inclusive access to health services for all members of the community across the lifespan. This will be approached from an individual and public health perspective. To identify the health needs and challenges of groups within a community, you will engage with health professionals from all fields of practice including learning disability, mental health, childrenas and adult nursing, and midwifery. Using an enquiry based learning approach, you will work collaboratively with your peers to identify and meet your learning needs with facilitative support from academic and practice staff.
During the unit you will examine social, health and behavioural sciences theory in relation to the health of individuals and communities. You will also review evidence from a range of sources, including public reports and enquiries, statistics and primary research which support specific service provision and service usersa perspectives of awareness, access to and disengagement with specific service provision

OVERVIEW:

You will provide a written essay detailing factors affecting access to healthcare for your selected individual within the scenario.

You will need to consider social, health and behavioural sciences theory in relation to your selected individual. In addition you will need to consider your role as a nurse within the inter-professional team in providing care in this context.

The essay must be underpinned by best evidence drawn from a range of sources and you are required to apply critical thinking skills to analyse this in order to effectively support your discussion.

Please note this is an individual piece of work separate from the earlier group presentation.

This work constitutes 80% of the overall unit grade.

GRADING CRITERIA:

FOCUS ON THE TASK SET:

Introduction: Outlines the key issues and the purpose of the essay. State the aim, identify the focus of your work and give a brief overview of what you will be discussing in the main body of your work.

Body of essay: All information provided should be relevant to your topic & your work should be structured well so that your discussion flows in a logical manner.

Conclusion: Should draw the threads of your argument together and it should link back to what you said you were going to do in your introduction. This section should not contain a?newa information.

ADVICE: Keep revisiting the learning outcomes to ensure you are doing what you remain focused on the task set. Act on feedback from previous assessments.

ISSUE HANDLING: All information in your essay should be relevant to your identified topic. It should be clear that you understand the key elements of the topic being discussed. Keep it simple and avoid including everything that is written on the topic by focusing on a specific aspect of the individual identified from the scenario.

Although identifying an individual from the scenario you will have to demonstrate how this person sits within the relevant theory available in relation to key topics from teaching sessions. For example you will need to identify an understanding of why and how your topic relates to public health per se. You will need to look at what is meant by communities and how the issue may impact on the individual. Look at the role of service users and carers as partners and evaluate the impact of informal caring on service provision. What key initiatives / frameworks / policies/ legislation have been put in place and the impact of these? Are there any challenges in managing /reducing the issue (i.e. health determinants, access to healthcare, disengagement from services, behavioural science theories, etc) Do include some epidemiology terms and provide some key statistics a and show you understand and can interpret the data available. Include the role of the nurse and the multi a professional teams.

ADVICE: Avoid simply describing the literature you have accessed. Remember to link the theory to practice and if there are challenges then identify them and provide a rationale for these. The more analytical you are the better the grade will be. Provide clear definitions for key terms / concepts being used a these can often be found in relevant articles. Avoid Internet and dictionary definitions. Act on feedback from previous assessments.

PRESENTATION & WRITTEN EXPRESSION: Your work should be presented in line with the guidelines in your handbook. Your work should be logical and neat. Meaning must be clear and written expression should be good.
