This assignment assesses learning outcomes 1, 2 and 3:
Knowledge-based outcomes
1. Knowledge and understanding of basic concepts, principles and theories in counselling including
humanistic, CBT and psychodynamic models
2. Identify similarities and differences with respect to counselling theories.
Skills-based outcomes
3. Communicate effectively in written form.
Assessment weighting: This assignment is a maximum of 2200 words in length and contributes 60% to
the overall module mark
Further information and guidance:
i · This assignment asks you to show your knowledge of counselling theories by asking you to
compare two approaches.
i · It makes sense to think about the defining features of each model as a starting point.
i · Remember that as well as describing the theories you are aiming to show evaluative and critical
understanding by developing an argument and exploring the meaning / significance of different
concepts. Remember that different aspects of theories can be interpreted in different ways a
possible basis for discussion.
i · Unlike the last assignment you are not invited to comment upon your own preferences for
different models, so if you decide to make any comments like this, think carefully about whether
it helps you address the essay question.
i · You are expected to use references to support your arguments and follow the usual academic
conventions.
i · You can choose a theory you covered in your last essay, but remember to write it as a new essay
to ensure the material in original.
