Irst-hand narrative of a Gilded-Age Prostitute
Read pages 1-170 and 306-329 of the attached pdf entitled, Madeleine: An Autobiography (New York: Harper & Brothers, 1919) which depicts the experiences of an American prostitute during the 1890s.
Then giving specific examples from the text, write a paper considering/answering the following questions:
1.) How did Madeleinebecome a prostitute?
2.) What does her story tell us about life during the late Gilded Age?
3.) How was she affected by industrialization, urbanization, rual decline, and the social problems associated with these transformations?
4.) What do we learn about the class, race, gender, and sexual hierarchies of that time? In other words, how did societys assumptions about proper behavior impact a woman like Madeleine?
5.) What was her critique of American society during the 1890s? What was her critique of American society during the 1890s? What was her view of moral reformers? What is her take on science and religion?
Paper should be 1250-1500 words, 12 point font, with margins between 1 and 1.25 inches.
