Discourse Community Analysis Pre-Assignment
Observation of Community

In this assignment, you be laying the groundwork for your Discourse Community Analysis paper by observing a discourse community to which you belong, taking detailed notes, and listing possible arguments you could make about how language is used in this community and why it matters.

Step One: Choose a Community
Because I want you to go beyond just describing the community, choose a discourse community to which you belong or have belonged to in the past and have a good understanding of to analyze. This community shouldn t be too large, such as all college freshmen, or too small, such as me and my best friend. Your community should be approved by me prior to beginning your observation, either in class or by e-mail.

Step Two: Observe the Community and Analyze Its Language
Choose one specific occasion to observe your discourse community, and take notes. If you are doing this from memory, choose a time that you can concentrate. While you should let your community know you are observing them for an academic paper, you don t have to tell them exactly what you are observing. Try participating as usual while taking note of specific words, phrases and gestures that are used. Focus on how the language works to include some and exclude others. How is the language used to form hierarchies? How is friendship revealed? How are those in the community stereotyped by their use of language? How are those outside the community excluded? What purposes, both obvious and subtle, does the use of language specific to this community serve? Think about these questions as you observe, as well as any other ideas you may have about how language is used in your community and why. Please note that while personal experiences and anecdotes will work within the paper, this is not just an analysis of you, but of the entire community.

Step Three: Type Up Your Notes, and Form Some Preliminary Conclusions
These notes will form the basis for a 4-6 page paper, so I expect that they will be at least 2-3 typed and double-spaced pages, although they can certainly be longer. Please note that I do not expect your notes to be in essay form; in fact, they do not even have to be in complete sentences. Once you have typed up what you actually observed, draw some preliminary conclusions about what you think you might argue in your paper. Your goal for your paper will be to reveal to and convince your reader that this particular community has certain ways of using language and that this matters, so spend some time thinking about what you observed and what it might mean.
