Format

The report will take the form of a paper of approximately 4pages included Works Cited page. The paper should be written in essay form, although you may use sub-topic headings for the sections of your paper. You should document your sources and references using the MLA format.

You will have identified three bibliographic resources to help you to understand and interpret the artwork. You should make use of these in your paper. In addition, you should use the following resources:

Your paper should cover these topics.

1. General Information
a. The title of the artwork
b. The artist who made the artwork.
c. The dates of the artist s life (year of birth and year of death)
d. The nationality or ethnicity of the artist
e. The date when the work was completed.
f. The medium used to make the artwork. (The material the artist used; type of paint; surface on which it was painted)
g. The size of the artwork.
h. The artistic movement or style with which the work is associated

2. Description of the painting.
a. Briefly describe subject of the painting (for example, haystacks in the French countryside).
b. Briefly describe the objects in the painting (for example, one or two haystacks in an open field beneath the sky).
c. Briefly describe the main use the artist made of the elements of visual art (Example:  The artist used mostly diagonal lines and a combination of red-orange, blue, white and brown to create the look of sunset in the winter. )
d. Briefly describe the main use the artist made of the principles of composition and design (Example:  Monet used the constant repetition of colors to give unity and movement to the painting. He balanced the two brown and blue haystacks in the left foreground with the large are of red-orange in the right background. )  mother and child? Motherhood?

3. Identification of the ideas that you will work with.
If you are analyzing one painting, select at least two ideas from Adler s list of 103 ideas. Indicate the name of the idea and the category in which Adler placed it. Choose two ideas or more from this website: 103ideascat.html, then analyze.

4. Application of the idea(s) to the artwork.
a. What is the artist communicating to us about the idea(s) through the artwork? (Example:  In his several paintings of haystacks Monet is showing use that it is impossible to paint  nature. We paint what we actually see, and what we see is the light reflected by objects that passes through the atmosphere to our eyes. When the light and atmosphere change, the  object that we see changes as well.)
b. How does the artist use the elements of visual art and the principles of composition to represent the idea(s) to us? Note: you do not need to discuss all of the elements or principles; only discuss those that are important. (Example:  Monet primarily uses changes in texture and color to show the effects of light and atmosphere on the haystacks. )

Your report is eligible for a maximum of 100 points. I will evaluate using the following criteria:

1. Did you provide the necessary general information about the painting? (Maximum of 15 points.)
2. Did you adequately describe the painting? (Maximum of 15 points.)
a. Did you adequately describe how the artist used the elements of visual art?
b. Did you adequately describe how the artist used the principles of composition and design?
3. Did you clearly identify the idea(s) that you used to analyze the artwork and the category to which the idea belongs? (Maximum of 10 points.)
4. Did you clearly indicate the statement that the artist made about the selected idea in the artwork? (Maximum of 20 points.)


5. Did you describe how the artist used the elements of visual art and the principles of composition to represent the idea(s) in the artwork? (Maximum of 20 points.)
6. Did you clearly indicate why you selected the particular artwork? (Maximum of 5 points.)
7. Did you clearly indicate what you learned from doing the paper? (Maximum of 5 points.)
8. Is your paper clearly written?
a. Do your sentences present clear ideas?
b. Is there a minimum of errors in grammar, spelling and word usage?
