(You may draw on other sources in addition to these books but not required to do so; your bibliography must list all sources consulted.) Choose one of the following:

1) Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of Uncle Toms Cabin and Douglass Narrative as anti-slavery literature. Which themes, characters or people, events or other aspects of the books are most (or least) effective for the authors purposes? Explain.

2)Critics of slavery often argued that slavery attempted (although not always successfully) to strip slaves of their humanity and to place slaves on the same level as beasts. Some critics argued further that slavery system also brutalized (i.e, destroyed or corrupted the human values of) slave owners and other free people. o Douglass and stowe seem to agree with those arguments? Explain.

3) What did Freedommean to Douglass and to the slaves depicted in Uncle Toms Cabin? What factors prevented others from doing so? Explain.
