Ither Song of Solomon, Green Grass, Running Water, and Native Speaker

Song of Solomon, Green Grass, Running Water, and Native Speaker each develop complex responses to American history through their narrative form as well as content. The topics that they dramatize include questions of history and memory; cultural identity and geography; migration and immigration; ethnicity and nationality; race and racism; language and culture; generational difference and conflict; culture and gendered identity; and the role of art or storytelling.

Select one of these books and write a 5-7 page essay that argues for your interpretation of its representation of one of these topics (or a more specific topic related to U.S. cultural values and conflicts). No matter what topic you choose, this paper should have a clear thesis and should be supported by analysis of (quoted) passages from the book that you have selected to discuss. You can consider assigned supplementary readings for the course to develop and support your argument, but additional research is not expected.
