Lobal Exploration and Global Empires 1500-1700

Slavery is one of the oldest of human institutions and virtually every premodern state in history depended on it to some extent. The African slave trade must be seen as part of the larger commercial system of Atlantic trade between Europe, Africa, and European colonies in North and South America and the Caribbean. The system was directed to exploitation of the New World, and thus, the slave trade grew not from racist principles (although they were used as justification), but from colonial economic needs. The major sources for slaves were the Kongoi??Angola region and the Guinea coast. Well over twelve million persons were lost to Africa through the Atlantic trade. Taken as a whole, the slave trade varied in extent quite sharply from period to period, with its peak in the eighteenth century and its demise in the nineteenth. The effects of the slave trade on Africa are not easy to assess. It appears that slavery was a result, not a cause, of regional instability and changei??increased warfare meant increased prisoners to be enslaved and sold off.

Lobal Exploration and Global Empires 1500-1700

In the fifteenth century, commercial supremacy was transferred from the Mediterranean and the Baltic to the Atlantic seaboard. Portuguese and Spanish explorers opened up great opportunities for trade in gold and spices. The exploration era had a significant impact on Europeans and Native Americans. Europeans introduced new crops, animals, and diseases from Europe to America and from America to Europe. Alien diseases such as measles and smallpox caused massive epidemics among the Americans. The European voyages would be the beginning of a long period of conquest.

After reviewing the several links discussing these explorations, write a four to five page paper answer the following question:

What were the reasons for the early voyages by the Portuguese and Spanish during the fifteenth century? How were they conducted?
