Merica right now and which novel most closely resembles it Farenheit 451, Brave New World, or 1984.
Subject and Purpose
The subject for this essay is America right now.
Your purpose is to state and defend your opinion as to which of the three novels (Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, or 1984) America right now most closely resembles. (This is an argument.) To begin, you should isolate a theme or themes from one of the novels: for example, the dissolution of the family, censorship, abuse of power, moral degeneracy, technology, or entertainment. Then, you should consider how or if these themes have a corresponding reality in our current society.
You must support your position by referring specifically to the novel you choose and to aspects of American society and culture. Use personal observation, personal experience, and common knowledge to support your position. You must also do some research to back up your observations and opinions. For example, if you claim that the issue of censorship in Fahrenheit 451 has some reality in America in 2008, you must prove it. You might cite examples of banned books, of government censorship, of political correctness, and so on.
Your purpose also is to rebut the opposing viewpoint. That is, if you believe America most closely resembles the world as depicted in 1984, you must explain why it does not resemble Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451.
This essay must be at least 1,000 words.
It must be written from your own observations, ideas, and common knowledge; you should not do any research beyond a close reading of the novels, and you may not use any research material when you write the essay.
As always, you must include parenthetical notes, a works cited page, and an outline with this essay. Essays that are deficient in this area will not meet minimum standards and will not pass.
