In 17th Century North America, colonists did not have the benefit of wealth nor leisure to enjoy the fine arts. Most artists specialized in trade similar to the silversmith expertise of the renowned Paul Revere and while commercial methods became a focus, leisurely art was not easily accessible or mainstay. However, into the early 18th century, portrait art become an increasing demand and many artists were attracted to that field. One of the early portrait painters Peter Pelham was from England, However, John Singleton Copley emerged as a native talent.
