Using your annotations of American Dreams and Nightmares,choose either of the following:

1) Focus on one story or poem. Choose a theme youve observed in that story or poem and construct an assertive thesis around it, such as The grandmothers manipulation in OConnors A Good Man is Hard to Find leads to her familys ultimate demiseor The grandmothers manipulation in OConnors A Good Man is Hard to Find comes from a good place is ultimately an example of how good can come of bad.Support your thesis with a) evidence from the primary text AND b) evidence from reputable literary sources.

2) Choose a theme that is present in two or more stories/poems, such as Herd mentalityor Niave dreams of socioeconmic advancement.Create a thesis relating this theme to American life at present, such as The type of herd mentality we see in stories like Kurt Voneguts Harrison Bergeron and Ralph Ellisons Battle Royal are extreme examples of how the American capitalist ideal sustains a self-destructive middle class.Support your thesis using a) evidence from the primary texts AND b) evidence from reputable literary and social/political commentators.

When researching your essay: I suggest taking a second round of annotations for your primary sources, annotating your secondary sources, brainstorming on paper/typing.

When constructing your essay: write a minimum of 40 sentences (roughly 8 paragraphs, 5 sentences in each paragraph); use Times New Roman 12pt font, double-spaced; use MLA Format; cite works in-text and in your Works Cited page.

You shoudl have a minimum of three sources. Primary (one or two texts that we read in class) and secondary (supplemental writing from experts/credible sources)
