Nalysis of Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne

Write a traditional literary analysis based the short story Young Goodman Brownwritten by Nathaniel Hawthorneon. When you write the analysis, you will focus on a particular element of the work that you found interesting, unique, and/or thought provoking. For example, you may write about symbolism, do an analysis of a character, discuss a recurring image, or look at the theme. You must include a minimum of three literary critiques (sources) written about the work you have selected. I do not want a plot summary or a biography of the author. When you write your paper, assume that your audience has a rough knowledge of the work.

” You must have a thesis. It will state what you intend to prove in your paper. After developing a thesis, you will come up with main points to support your thesis. These will become your topic sentences for body paragraphs. Each topic sentence should be clearly and directly linked to your thesis. When you have three or four main points, you can start to develop paragraphs that support your topic sentences. You will use specific evidence from the literary short story to support each topic sentence.

” The literary critiques (sources) will be a minimal part of your paper. You will incorporate the information from the critiques directly into your body paragraphs. A minimum of three literary critiques are required. They must be scholarly in nature (versus a student website, for example).

” You should not write a plot summary or a biography of the author. In other words, you will not spend a great deal of time in your paper explaining what happened in the story.

” A literary analysis does not use personal pronouns (I, you, we), so you will not say, for example, I think Edna is immature. You will simply state, Edna is immature. Then, you would follow that with specific paraphrases or direct quotations from the novel which prove this is true.

” When you discuss action in the work, you use present tense. For example, you would write, Edna feels alone rather than Edna felt alone.

” The paper must be 4-5 pages typed. I am very serious about the minimum length requirement!
