Kinesics, Body Language.
” One Meta-Cognition Exercise
Also, one meta-cognition exercise, your own reflections about your learning through this course:

” Ottenheimer Chapter 2, Exercise
The Influence of Language on Culture
Refer to Ottenheimer pp. 31-39.
” First Part of this Exercise: 
 
Objective viewpoint
Show that you understand the following three concepts according to the textbook. Summarize or paraphrase these concepts from the textbook.
” Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis
” Strong Whorf
” Weaker Whorf
” Second Part of this Exercise: 
 
Subjective perception
Then, draw from your own experiences or expectations:
” Tell me, which of the two corresponds more closely to your own expectations, the Strong Whorfor the Weaker Whorf”.
” Explain why from your own experiences or expectations.
” These are New Concepts  Be Careful:
These are new concepts in our studies.
” Dont confuse the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis on the one hand and ethnocentrism on the other hand. They may be related sometimes, but they are different concepts.

” The Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis its variants on the one hand are different from ethnocentrism and cultural relativism on the other hand. They may be related sometimes, but they are different sets of concepts.

Ethnography of Communication
Refer to Ottenheimer pp. 122-132 and p. 138.
” Observe:
Carefully observe a short real-life event (one of your own choice) which involves spoken language.
” Analyze:
Identify the following factors:
” Setting / situation (re: pp. 123-124).
” Participants (re: pp. 124-126)
” Ends (re: pp. 126-128)
” Act sequence (re: pp. 128-131)
” Key (re: pp. 131-132)
” Genre (re: p. 138)
For your analysis, make sure you have grasped the meanings of those six factors from Ottenheimer pp. 122-132 and p. 138.
(Not required: Instrumentalities, Registers, and Norms from Ottenheimer pp. 132-137.)
” Be Careful with Subjective / Objective:
Remain aware of the limits of your own knowledge.
” Differentiate between objective perspectives for which you have ample evidence on the one hand and subjective opinions on the other hand.
” If the latter (subjective), then predicate your descriptions accordingly by writing, It seems to me &  or writing something else to similar effect.
” Be careful to do this particularly in your description of the Ends”.
” Organize:
This should be organized as an analysis.
” Each of the six factors should be clearly identified in your analysis.
” Each should be a coherent section with its own heading in your analysis.
” Notice especially: The Act sequenceshould not be a piece of short-story writing. It should record as much as possible of the actual conversation verbatim for the analysis, like this for example:
John: How are you?
Sally, Fine, thanks, and you?”

Kinesics
Refer to Ottenheimer pp. 160-164.
” Give an example of each of the following sorts of gestures:
” emblem
” illustrator
” affect display
” regulator
” adaptor
One example of each.
Your examples should be different from the ones in the textbook.
” Describe it, and identify its meaning in each instance:
Describe the action in each instance.
Also, describe any associated verbal component (speech) if any is involved.
Then, identify the meaning.

” Meta-Cognition Exercise, Your Own Reflections
(Meta-cognition is Cognition about cognition”, or ”knowing about knowing”.)
” Reflect on your own
Reflect on what you have learned through this course, what you have come to know through this course. Think about what you have learned. Focus on any aspect of cultural anthropology or on the field overall. Its your choice.
