Background
Supplier Environmental Assessment is normally carried out by companies adopting an
EMS, whether this EMS is certified or not. Green purchasing is a similar term which
involves the adoption of environmental criteria/considerations for buying goods or
services by a company or by a public body (public procurement).
Sustainable procurement and sustainable supplies are terms associated with the
principles of sustainable development which also incorporates economic and social
considerations in selecting suppliers.
Task 1 (50% up to 2,000 words)
Critically discuss the need to implement a supplier environmental assessment
programme. Use examples of such programmes from literature to support
discussions.
Guidance:
a? Why is suppliersa environmental performance important to a company
adopting an EMS, whether certified or not? Where does Suppliers
Environmental Assessment fit within an EMS? Refer to relevant
standards/good practice available
a? What methods can be used for assessing the environmental performance of
suppliers? Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of such methods.
Task 2 (50% up to 2,000 words)
Critically discuss the adoption of EMS as a vehicle to achieve sustainability of
company operations. Again you need to support your discussions using academic
literature and examples from practice.
Guidance
a? Briefly introduce the three aspects of sustainability and the role of companies
in addressing all these three aspects, including the concept of CSR.
a? What are the benefits and what are the limitations of using EMS to achieve a
sustainable business?
a. Discuss how you would identify and improve social impacts of
companies
b. What are the issues related to establishing sustainability indicators?
c. In your discussions reference should be made to CSR and
sustainability standards.
Your assignment should be structured with subheadings and demonstrate further
reading. Reference to established standards for both parts is essential. You need a
full list of your sources at the end and indicate where you have used them within
the text using in-text citations.

Background
You are an independent environmental auditor and you have been asked by the
Environmental Coordinator of a Manufacturing Plant to carry out a site audit. You
understand that the Coordinatoras responsibility is to develop an EMS to ISO 14001 standard.
Task
Discuss the methods you will use during a site environmental audit in order to identify
key issues for the company and gather audit evidence.
Guidance:
Explain fully the rationale and significance of the methods you would use. For example are
these methods reliable? What else would you do to verify your audit findings?
In your explanation of what aspects of a companyas operations you need to audit, provide
examples of policies or laws or standards that drive your investigations. For example: WHY
would you investigate storage of chemicals?
Part 2 (50% of total mark, 2000 words) (LO K1, K2)
Background
A companyas environmental policy states commitment to the principles of Sustainable Waste
Management.
Task
Explain how a company would use Environmental Management Systems to fulfil its
commitment.
Guidance:
Briefly explain the regulatory and good practice context in relation to waste management by a
company. For example explain the waste hierarchy.
For the main text you can base your answer on ISO 14001 or any other EMS standard. It is
important that you critically explain what each of the EMS elements can or cannot do to fulfil
the above policy statement for example how audits can assist in improving waste
management performance etc
Your assignment should be clearly structured, with subheadings. You need to
demonstrate additional reading with appropriate referencing of all your sources,

within the text, including materials posted on Sunspace. It is essential that you
use academic papers to support your statements.
