Instructions for Writing the Paper

Overview of the Paper
You will choose a legal topic and court case which will present an ethical dilemma. You will be asked to review the topic, analyze the case, answer some questions, complete some research on actual court cases and laws that deal with the ethical dilemma, and complete a research paper. The research paper should identify the dilemma and two courses of action that you would consider. You will identify one course of action that you would take and explain your rationale in choosing that course of action over the other one. Your choice should be based on a law or ethical code discussed in this course. Basically, your paper will follow this outline:

Paragraph 1 Write an introduction that summarizes the legal topic you will be discussing, and a sentence that states your position on the dilemma that is presented in the relevant court case. Identify your key ethical issue and raise important questions.
Paragraph 2 Write a summary on your relevant Court Case, and connect it to your dilemma.
Paragraph 3 Write a summary on another court case or medical or legal journal and connect to your dilemma.
Paragraphs 4-5 Identify two courses of action that you would take that are supported by laws or ethical codes discussed in this course and select one as your choice. Evaluate these actions based on consequences.
Paragragh 6 Write a conclusion that states your course of action and why you selected this one over the other one. Include multiple viewpoints.

More specifically:
Paragragh 1: Paragraph 1 is your introduction. Summarize the legal topic you are discussing and identify the dilemma that exists in the relevant court case you reviewed. Identify your key ethical issue and raise at least one or two ethical questions that should be asked. Then in one sentence, state your position on the dilemma.

Paragraph 2: Summarize research (background) found on the court case from a law journal or other acceptable source. Summarize this case and present its findings. Show a direct correlation or connection to the dilemma about which you are writing.

Paragraph 3: Summarize research found on a second court case or article from a medical or law journal. Show a direct correlation or connection to the dilemma about which you are writing.

Paragraph 4: In Paragraph 4, present two courses of action that you might take based on what you have learned in this course. Draw upon at least two of your responses to questions raised in your introduction and relate these to your choices of action. Evaluate these actions based upon the implications and the consequences that might occur by taking each course of action.

Paragraph 5: In Paragraph 5, identify the chosen course of action you would take between the two that you outlined above. Also, in this paragraph, be sure to describe in detail the professional code of ethics, law, or legal findings that support your choice. Give enough detail so that your reader fully understands the law or code and how it may guide your actions in resolving your dilemma. You will be evaluated on ethical reasoning based upon your application of the law or ethical code.

Paragraph 6: Paragraph 6 is your conclusion. In your conclusion, do three things:
1. Restate your choice for course of action.
2. Explain your rationale or reasons for selecting this course of action over the other one.
3. In selecting this course of action, which ethical viewpoints or ideas were considered? Which alternative viewpoints or ideas did you disregard and why? In your response, you may consider legal, ethical, religious, and social (customs and traditions) frames of reference.
