Commercial Gallery and Alternative Gallery Visit due
Objective: To transfer the knowledge acquired in the classroom to a new situation. To write
clearly and logically on topics related to art.
A list of galleries is attached. Galleries not on the list may not meet the requirements of the assignment. State the name and address of the galleries and date.
Answer the following:
1. General impressions on physical environment (space, lighting, framing, etc.), how
you were greeted and treated; any other comments.
2. Specific works of art you reviewed. Inspect one piece carefully. Include the name
of the artist and the title of the work ( in italics), approximate dimensions, medium in sentence form.
Next describe the subject matter, how the elements (line,shape,value,color,texture) are used, content, your reactions and ideas about the work. Do not use photography or non-objective
art. This exercise is a a?critiquea?. There is no right or wrong answers. Points are awarded for clarity of thought, completeness and complexity of ideas, understanding of major concepts
Prepare a short answer (at least one paragraph for each question)a typed (10 -12pt. type,
1a? margins, double spaced). Each report (one on the commercial, one on the alternative
space) should be 1 A? 2 pages minimum, 3-4 pages total, minimum. Each essay should have 5 paragraphs, if you turn in less points will be deducted. Include a sketch or photograph of
the works you are reviewing; a photo if possible.
Grading Criteria: Reports should answer the following questions in order stated. Answer
each question in paragraph form. A paragraph has sentences that all relate
to each other. Points will be given for the completeness and clarity in each
category. (20 pts. total for each report. (one commercial, one alternative
space for 40 points).
1. General impressions of the space. 3 pts.
2. Description of the subject matter. 4 pts.
3. Description of the elements and how each is used (Chs. 4-7). 5 pts.
4. Discussion of the content (what does it mean and how you created the meaning)
5 pt.s
5. Your personal reactions to the piece. 3 pts.
Failure to write according to the guidelines will result in point deductions. Points will be deducted for incorrect spelling and grammar. Proofread and edit your paper. After five grammatical or spelling errors, I will return the paper to you for revision. If the paper is not revised, the point total will remain as graded.
