Ompare and Contrast the history of coffee in Brazil, Colombia and Costa Rica in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries

Essay title Compare and Contrast the history of coffee in Brazil, Colombia and Costa Rica in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries

Essay should begin by comparing the 3 coffee industries in terms of: Land Tenure (types of land holdings used etc), Labour (role of women, movement from slave labour to free coffee colono etc) and Foreign Participation (levels and forms of)

The Essay should then focus on the importance of coffee towards industrialisation in each country. In doing so it should flag the key arguments on this subject, such as those of: Furtado, Dean, Carlos Pelaez, Albert Fishlow (some of these may focus on Sao Paulo but can be used to consider the whole of Latin America)

Finally the essay should discuss the environmental impact of the coffee industry on the countries through deforestation etc.

Please include the following two essays as sources:

The Coffee Colono of Sao Paulo, Brazil: Migration and Mobility 1880-1930

And

The formation of the coffee estate in the nineteenth century Costa Rica

Both found in Kenneth Duncan and Ian Rutledge with Colin Harding, Land and Labour in Latin America: Essays on the development of Agrarian Capitalism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries Cambridge: Cambridge University Press 1977.

I realise this is quite a rigid essay request, having never used this service before I was unsure how specific I could be!! Please try to stick to this but if any problems/ideas arise do not hesitate to let me know and I will adapt to what is possible. Thanks very Much!!
