Essay Assignment
1) This assignment will require you to compare a modern western work with an
ancient non-western myth. Western works are those that originate from
the Americas or Europe; non-western works originate from anywhere else
(Africa, Asia, or the Near East).
2) Select one modern western work (a movie, a TV show, a book, a poem, a song,
etc.) that can be compared with an ancient myth. The creator of this work (writer,
director, composer, etc.) must be from a western culture. The work may be set in
any culture, however.
3) Compare and contrast this work with one of the non-western myths that we have
read and/or discussed this semester. You must use one of the following myths:
The Enuma Elish
The Baal Cycle
The Illuyanka Myths
The Song of Kumarbi
The Song of Ullikummi
The Anansi myths
The Raven myths
The Coyote myth
The Tale of Tulisa

You may NOT use an ancient western myth. This means that you may NOT use
the following myths:
Genesis or any other part of the Bible
Hesiods Theogony or Works and DaysHomers Iliad or Odyssey
The Homeric Hymn to Demeter
Aeschylus Prometheus Bound
Apuleius Cupid and Psyche
English, German, or Hungarian folktales (Rose Tree; Juniper Tree; Singing,
Soaring Lark; Crows Nest)
The Prose Edda and Norse myths
