Guidelines for Comparison of a Nurse and a Non-Nurse Leader.
One of the ways to learn about and develop effective leadership abilities is to analyze the values and actions of individuals who are or have been recognized as leaders. By studing their styles, the way they interacted with others, the nature of the situations in which they Rose above the crowdand the ways in which they used power, one can develop an understanding of why these individuals are considered to be leaders and how they have been able to influence others towerd achieving goals. This assignment provides the student with the opportunity to engage in such an analysis.
The student is to conduct a thorough review of the literature that describes/defines leaders and leadership and critique those descriptions/definitions in terms of their usefulness. As a result of this critical analysis, each student is to offer her or his definition and description of leaders and leadership and Definedor “justifythose definitions and descriptions. Literature related to power, change, creativity, credibility, image, style, leader-follower interactions, conflict management, envisioning goals, affirming values, motivating others, managing, achieving a workable unity, serving as a symbol, explaining, representing a group externally, or renewing self and others is appropriate to be reviewed and Interpreted.”
Armed with this foundation, the student can then look more carefully and critically at the selected leaders.
Each student is to select a contemporary or historical figure outside the field of nursing who is thought of as a leader. After reading works by or about the leader (andinterviewing him or her, if possible), the student will write an analysis of that individual as a leader, using all elements of the definition/description of leaders and leadership she or he developed as a guide. EVIDENCE is to be provided from sources by or about the leader to support the students conclusions about the individuals leadership.
In an attempt to better understand ourown discipline and to address the critisms that There are no leaders in nursing today,each student also will select a contemporary nursing person whom she or he considers to be a leader and conduct a similar analysis of that individuals as a leader. Again, references by and/or about the selected nursing leader as well as data gathered through a review of her or his curriculum vitae or an interview with her or him (IF POSSIBLE)are to be used as the basis for the analysis.
