The concept of competitive advantage seems to be at the centre of any organisation which seeks to have a succesful, bright future and wants to avoid being Stuck in the middleas M.E. Porter(1980) put it in his theory of generic strategies.

Yet, if we are to believe R.Peters and N. Austin (1986 p 46) competitive advantage is not easily acheived, Excellence is a game of inches, or millimetres. No one act is, per se, clinching. But a thousand things… each done a tiny bit better, do add up tp a memorable responsiveness and distinction and loyalty… and slighty higher margins.”

It is suggested then that competitive advantage may bae acheived through several actions, many of which fall into the area of marketing. Core, tangible, and augmented product, image, segmentation, positioning, personnel, price, even technology (this list is not neccessarily exhaustive) all seem to play a role in the search for competitive edge.

For your assignment, reach a decison on a definition of what competitive advantage is and how it may be achieved. what are the most significant connections between competitive advantage and individual elements of marketing strategy and tactics, some of which have already been mentioned, and what contributions do they make to acheive this stat? what examples from your industry can you apply to support your findings?
