Responding Effectively to Disruptive Student Behavior, Part 2

This weeks Learning Resources describe models for a problem-solving approach to behavior management. In the problem-solving approach, the teacher collaborates with a student who is demonstrating inappropriate behaviors to identify reasons behind the behaviors and to develop a plan for improvement. Revisit the models described in the Required Reading. Select one of the models for use in your classroom. Analyze the model to determine how you might modify it to increase its effectiveness with your students.

Using the document* you created in Week 5, complete the following:

1.Describe the steps in the problem-solving process you will use with your students.
2.Identify the outcomes you expect to see as a result of the implementation of the model
3.Explain how these steps will help your students learn to make responsible choices about their behavior.
4.Reflect on the choices you made in Parts One and Two for how you will respond to student misbehavior. Evaluate and discuss the potential impact of your new plans on your students ability to make responsible choices in your classroom learning environment.

Responding Effectively to Disruptive Student Behavior, Part 1

In the first four weeks of this course, you developed parts of your Comprehensive Classroom Management Plan that focus on preventing behavior problems in your classroom. Now, you will begin development of parts of your plan that focus on how you will respond when students inevitably violate rules or otherwise disrupt your classroom learning environment. This part of your plan will encompass a continuum of strategies for responding to behaviors ranging from minor to severe or chronic. Part One of this assignment, to be completed this week, will focus on minor disruptive behaviors.

Note to Candidates: Part Two of this assignment, to be completed next week, will focus on severe or chronic behaviors. You will submit Parts One and Two together next week in the Application 6 submission area.

As the classroom teacher, one of your goals is to help students learn how to make responsible decisions and to navigate safely and calmly through challenging situations. In this weeki??s Learning Resources, Dr. Vern Jones recommends an approach in which teachers respond to inappropriate behavior by teaching students skills that allow them to demonstrate more appropriate behaviors. Consider Figure 8.1 in Chapter 8 of the course text, which compares how teachers respond to academic problems with how they respond to social problems. Chapter 8 also provides a number of strategies for responding to rule violations and challenging behaviors. To prepare for this assignment, reflect on your current beliefs about why students misbehave and how to effectively respond to inappropriate behavior. What has worked for you and your students? What strategies have not produced long-term success? Based on your learning this week, what aspects of your approach would you like to modify?

Using the template* provided below, complete the following for Part One of this assignment:

1.Identify four strategies from the Learning Resources for responding to minor disruptive behaviors that you will incorporate into your Classroom Management Plan.
2.Explain your desired outcome for implementing each strategy.
