CONCEPT NOTES

*The concept note should focus on one of the following concepts:
1) Culture
2) Gender
3) Identity

a? A concept note is a concise synthesis of the ideas and themes associated with a particular concept for example, culture, in the form of a definition.

a? A concept note is not expected to have the same structure as an essay. Rather, it will include, probably in this order:

a. Some explanation of the origins of the concept.
b. Some examination of the ways the concept has been used in Cultural Studies.
c. Some conclusion as to the utility of the concept, and how best it should be used.

a? A concept note is not expected to say everything about a concept. One or two points well-made are more effective than saying little about a lot of things.

a? Where appropriate, a concept note should include references to important thinkers who have contributed to debates about the concept. These references should be cited in a bibliography in the same way as an essay, Harvard style and in text referencing.

a? Where appropriate, a concept note should use examples a either real or hypothetical that exemplify the successful or unsuccessful deployment of a concept.
