Onor, Virtue, and the Paradox of the Old South (Antebellum period and most specifically 1800 to 1864)

I have submitted a rough draft of my thesis which is on James Henry Hammond and the Paradox of the Old South. My professor said my examination of James Henry Hammond was sound but i need to define the civilization he embodied in a clear fashion. My suggested readings are Southern Honor: Ethics and Behavior in the Old South by Betram Wyatt-Brown, Honor and Slavery by Kenneth Greenburg, and The Mind of the South by W.J. Cash. Specifically to show the paradox created by the Southern Elite in upholding ideals of freedom through the enslavement and domination of those in the lower classes. Define ethics in the South, virtue, ambition, and talk specifically about nullification. thanks
