Onsider culture as an expression of identity and explore the ways in which literature and art are used to shape that identity for political purposes
consider culture as an expression of identity and explore the ways in which literature and art are used to shape that identity for political purposes.
When responding, close reference should be made to pygmalion and ecucating Rita. This question relates to a number of themes in the module. to begin with, its focus on culture as an Identitycan be seen to relate to the ideas of Mcdonald,Hoggart and raymond williams, who all argued that culture was the ways in which we lived our lives. Our culture is our way of life, and therefore it is integrally related to our sense of identitywho we are. At first glance this can seem relatively straighforward. Our culture is our class, our ethnicity , where we are from and what we do for a living. However there is a futher question here about the political value which such culture can contain. It is impossible for example to think about the culture of classes without recognising the extent to which social and political structure are designed to maintain them. the question is asking you then to explore as well some ways in which literature perpetuates existing class structures by implicitly valuing cultural identity. an example is george bernard shaws pygmalion or willy Russels Educating Rita, both of which explores the relationship between High cultureand cultural identity. You should demonstrate the following in your work
. an awareness of the different ideas and values represented in and through literature and language of how different critical approaches to them are themselves productive of knowledge
. powers of textual analysis and critical arguement and will have an appropraite command of wriiten english
. they will show a critical awareness of historical differences and of the affective power of language to shape meaning
. appreciation of the importance of scholarly standards of presentation and of writing acurately, clearly and effectively.
