Contemporary Art Essay: Art, Self, and Society

Critical Thinking/ Formal Essay

Christo and Jean-Claude, Wrapped Reichstag, Installation, Berlin, Germany, 9 June 1884
Aerial Photograph of Installation Site
Pick a work of art done in or near the year you were born. Does it seem to have any special message for you? Pick another work done in or near the year you turned sixteen. Does it have any special resonance with you? How does the artwork relate to your culture or society at the time of its making? Are there any correlations between yourself, the artwork, and events of the time or culture? Think about how the artwork relates to you, how you relate the the artwork, how the artwork relates to a wider audience in society of the time period, any similarities you find between yourself and the culture of the time frame, and any insights you gather.

Whatever your answers, discuss why you think you reacted the way you did. Make sure to give an introduction and definitely a conclusion to your essay to tie your ideas together and give clarity and closure. I will grade very closely on the essay assignment so do your best.

Research: You MUST have a Works Cited page or face grade penalties up to one full letter grade.
1. Use the textbook to find an artist/textbook research

2. Internet research/artist website

3. Article/Book/Other Source

You MUST have 3 sources minimum!

Please cite all research, quotes, and images by either footnotes or parenthetical referencing plus give a works cited page at the end of the essay. I need the references to give major identifying information but will not be overly picky according to correct MLA or APA guidelines.

Be sure to follow good writing skills with an introduction, body, and conclusion. Give a clear introductory sentence and organize your paragraphs based on linear logic (i.e. one thought, example, or idea flows logically and easily into another). Tell me how, what, and why of how you think with supporting information from the artist or artwork whatever your opinion. Explain every statement!

You must give a minimum of one page and a half for passing credit of C and have a clear introduction, body of an essay in several paragraphs, and a conclusion! Avoid Sweepingstatements (for example, Throughout time humans have made art.”) that are very vague, unless you really break down the logic, purpose, and assumptions. Give me all back ground information needed to set up the essay and what you think and why.

Give examples of the artwork you chose or at least give all identifying information in artist, title of work, media, and year completed. Proofread your writing before submitting. Use Chapters 18 through 20 usually to find artwork and information on the artwork you choose or the beginning chapters of the book.
