Backgroundbr /
Some multi-national companies have adopted a one language policy where one language becomes the lingua franca and dominant language over others in the workplace. This can happen in a multilingual environment where there are many speakers of different languages but equally can be found in dominant monolingual environments where other languages are not tolerated. At the heart of this debate is the dominance of Global English and the issues this raises in relation to national culture, communication and identity. And in the case of language communication, who decides what is efficient communication? How fluent does an individual need to be in L2 English language to communicate effectively? The essay question you have been given is focused on a quote from Neeley ( 2012:119) who states that a?unrestricted multilingualism is inefficient and gets in the way of accomplishing business goalsa?. You are to critically evaluate his argument for a one language policy in business and his behavioural approach to language use. br /
