The paper is based on the beginning of the Gelvin textbook through Chapter 10 and the first four chapters in Khater s Sources.
Your essays must be thesis driven. You need to develop a thesis for each essay, which is expressed in the introduction and then supported throughout. Your essays should conclude with a summarizing but non-repetitious paragraph. Make sure to develop your ideas and thoughts clearly and concisely. You will be holistically graded on:
Critical thinking
Content
Organization of ideas and paragraphing
Writing style
Spelling and grammar (use Microsoft Word spelling and grammar check)

You MUST complete all 5 essays. Be sure to provide APA format citations and references based on the required readings and sources within your answers. Each essay should be a minimum of one page (250 words).

1. Discuss the difficulties faced by the Middle Eastern empires in adapting to the intellectual, technological, economic, political and social challenges presented by the West in the 18th and 19th centuries.

2. Discuss the various reactions of the peoples of the Middle East to Western incursion. Which approaches were successful, which failures, and why? Could the people of the Middle East have done anything different to protect themselves from Western encroachment?

3. Describe and analyze the great-power competition over Persia before 1907. After considering the Anglo-Russian Entente, discuss its effectiveness in keeping stability in the area.

4. Identify three to five major problems faced by the Ottoman Empire in the 19th and early part of the 20th centuries. Describe the reforms of such people as Mahmet Ali and the Young Turks. To what extent were they successful in solving or alleviating the problems of the Ottoman Empire?

5. Did the people of the Middle East attempt to copy any Western influences throughout the 19th and early part of the 20th centuries? If so, which ones, why, and what impact, if any, did they have?
