Professional Development Activity: MOODLE Course Creator Workshop
Introduction
This year for the first time, the hairdressing section will trial the flexible delivery of the Certificate ll in Hairdressing to school students wanting to gain the qualification in one year as part of their Higher School Certificate. This qualification in the past has taken two years to complete which means students that commence the course in their last year of school (Year 12) are disadvantaged because they are only able to complete A? the units, and therefore can only receive a a?Statement of Attainmenta for the units completed successfully. The students have to come back post school to finish the remaining units of the qualification. In order to deliver the qualification in the one calendar year while still adhering to Board of Studies and school requirements requires the course to be partially delivered in the school holidays. Students will have to attend one full week during the April, July and September holidays. However, due to the flexible nature of a learning management system, students will be able to complete part of their study off campus. The structured of the program will include 4 days face to face instruction and one day off campus with self directed activities. MOODLE has been selected as the learning management system, as it will enable teachers to manage, communicate and track student progress while off site. There is several retail units embedded in Certificate ll in Hairdressing Qualification. These units are available in a a?toolboxa format and for this reason have been selected as the most appropriate units to upload onto the MOODLE platform for flexible delivery.

Identify a professional development activity that you will (or hope to) undertake as a participant.
a? The professional development activity I wish to undertake as a participant is a MOODLE course creator workshop

Describe the nature of the activity and the main objectives of the program.
a? NatureA person given the role of course creator will be able to create courses and assign teachers to deliver the courses. The course creator role is aimed at instructional designers, educational developers and teachers engaged in online teaching. In my workplace the role is often limited to a program coordinator, head teacher or a teacher from each faculty selected on their computer competence. Instruction in a MOODLE course creator role is freely available on-line through YouTube video tutorials, e-learning sites, commercially purchased workshops, or in my case organized by the e-mentor from our Workforce Development section. The one day course will equip me with the skills and knowledge to design/create an e-learning course in Moodle 2.2 using the topic format and then populate each topic with activities and learning resources that include learning objects from the retail operations toolbox.

By the end of the course I will be able to;
Use MOODLE 2.2 to;
a? setup a Moodle course shell from scratch using the topic format
a? populate a Moodle course with content, communications and assignments
a? enroll students in a Moodle course using the a?groupa functionality
a? upload resources such as learning objects from the Retail Operationsa toolbox
a? create MOODLE activities such as quizzes and forums

Define what your professional learning goals are in undertaking this activity. Explain why you think undertaking this activity will assist you in meeting these learning goals.
My professional learning goals from undertaking this activity, in addition to creating a solution to enable our year 12 school students acquire a Certificate ll hairdressing qualification in one year, is to acquire a deeper understanding of learning management systems and their impact on training processes and practice, and competence preparing for implementation. Secondly, I will be able to assist my colleagues from other faculties with their transition into a rapidly developing digital institute.
