Core and Periphery

Drawing from chapter two of the course textbook, and other sources as needed, discuss whether the United States should still be considered a core country. Discuss two arguments in support of and two arguments against your claims. Provide evidence to support your claim. Also, consider what countries might be moving into the core or the semiperiphery or periphery. What evidence could you find to support such transitions?

GMOs, Traditional Foods and Indigenous Sovereignty

Focusing primarily on the example the Ojibweas relationship to wild rice in Minnesote, Winona LaDukeas 2007 Orion article, a?Ricekeepers: A struggle to protect biodiversity and a Native American way of lifea? discusses the issue of a?biocolonialisma? and how it is affecting the Ojibwe and other indigenous peoples around the world. Migration and Climate Change

As discussed in your textbook, the movement of people at multiple scales involves politics, economics, human rights and more. Choose a place where climate change-induced migration has been a key topic in the news since the year 2000 (you may use online sources like the BBC, New York Times, or even a local newspaper). Write two paragraphs summarizing the situation: the who, what, where and why of this situation. Explain the a?pusha? or a?pulla? factors for people migrating to or from that place. Be sure to distinguish if this migration is within a single country, or from one country to others. Explain how the government and other organizations are involved. An excellent essay will acknowledge current attempts to address the issue and explain why the proposed solution is an improvement on current approaches.
