Ouse of Tata, 1995: The Next Generation (A)
this is a case study and u should read the case first and then write the paper
1. Which if any of the following initiatives undertaken by Ratan Tata do you think were good ideas and why? Were these initiatives creating value or were they just creating more overhead and burdening the corporate portfolio?
a. Creation of a group brand (should there be a Tata brand? What is the value added of a group brand in an emerging market? What are the pros and cons of this strategy?)
b. Building of equity interlocks among the Tata companies (Is it easier to build a group brand if the companies are more closely held? What are the pros and cons of these interlocks?)
c. Sale of a part of Tata Industries Ltd. To the Hong Kong based Jardine Matheson Group (is selling part of Tata Industries consistent with strengthening the corporate portfolio?)
d. Revitalization of Tata Administrative Services (Is the Tata group adding any value on the managerial labor market intermediation front relative to what individual firms could do?)
2. Evaluate the corporate portfolio in 1995. Does it make sense? Is the House of Tata just an opportunistic collection of businesses or is there some sound and rational basis for the activities in which it is involved? Would you divest some of the businesses if you were the CEO? Which ones and why? Which industries would you invest more heavily in and why?
Here you need to apply the Triangle of Corporate Strategy and explore whether there is a fit between businesses, resources and organization. You need to discuss if/how the corporate office adds value to these businesses.
REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE BEING GRADED ON A COMPETITIVE BASIS ALONG THE FOLLOWING DIMENSIONS: COMPREHENSIVENESS (includes ability to integrate ideas from the Harvard articles assigned in this class), CLARITY AND CREATIVITY/INSIGHTFULNESS.

Your team should address in 2-3 single-spaced pages the discussion question(s) for a given case. The write-up should not overly emphasize facts from the readings but rather draw upon relevant material to address the following points:
Make a recommendation based on your analysis of what the firm/manager should do. Please outline clearly the assumptions that led you to make this recommendation and your analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of options to this particular recommendation.
Your write-up should also incorporate why alternative strategies are not appropriate.
Summarize the key takeaways of the case that provide lessons to other firms/managers
facing similar challenges.
Additional guidelines will be provided on Blackboard.
For the remaining case discussions, each student should post a brief response (3-5 sentences) to the bold italicized question. This is not a group assignment.
