With this example in mind, consider the pros and cons of allowing quality efforts to be voluntary versus
regulating them.

Identify in the first line of your posting the quality effort(s) you researched.
Briefly describe the effort(s). In what ways is the government involved in the quality effort(s)? Do you agree that this is the best approach? Why or why not?

In your view, can the market protect health care quality adequately, or is government involvement needed? Justify your position and provide specific examples.

Overnment versus Private Options for Quality

The government intervenes in some areas of healthcare related to quality, for example by requiring the collection and sharing of data by healthcare organizations. Although this presents certain challenges for organizations, it also serves to standardize the information and thereby help consumers make informed choices. Currently, many of the quality efforts in healthcare are voluntary, that is there are not required by the government but are the result of private initiatives. It might even be argued that the private sector is leading the way in terms of the advances in quality recently made in health care. What are the advantages and disadvantages of regulating quality efforts versus allowing them to be voluntary.
