Stanton, Part Two. Following our research into the historical and social context of Stantonas a?Declaration of Sentiments,a? how (and why) did Stanton recalculate the definition of a?self-evident truthsa?
Through our class discussions and group assignments, we now understand that the definition of self-evident truths (Fredrickson) , forged by John Locke and several others, was heavily influenced by many social movements. These movements included Eurocentric thinking, the religious aspirations of Manifest Destiny, and the social construct of the Cult of Womanhood. By the 1840s, when Stanton and her colleagues wrote the Declaration of Sentiments, men and women believed and accepted several assumptions about the status, physiology and mentality of women. These a?truthsa were supported by the legal system, and the religious affiliations.
Also following our class discussions, we examined how Fredrickson might apply his social theory to the organic nature of a truth reportedly so evident, it needs no proof. And yet, as we discussed, if truth reflects the reality of a certain time and place, reality can change as time and place changes. As such, truth can change. But it is not an easy change, nor one that happens just because someone thinks it should. Social change tends to be a process.
This essay needs to investigate that change, using language appropriate for academic scholarship. What social truths was Stanton challenging in her argument? What was her purpose behind her argument? Did she win her argument? It is expected that you use research to help develop your ideas, including drawing upon the research for previous papers.
