1 Introduction to the Module
This session will introduce the module and encourage you to think about why we might study how people behave in organisations. It will also introduce you to the idea that there are different perspectives through which to understand organisational behaviour and encourage you to think critically.
2 Work and Identity
This session will consider why people work and the meaning it holds for them using scenes from films such as American Beauty to illustrate. We consider the impact of the shift towards identities founded on consumption and look at how discourses of entrepreneurial identity have changed the way in which we think about our relationship to organisations.

3 Organisational Culture In an attempt to manage meanings and identities in organizations, managers have turned to the anthropological notion of a?culturea as a means of understanding organisations. The idea of culture provides a useful metaphor for grasping the informal dynamics of organization. This session will review the rise of managerial attempts to manage culture, consider their efficacy and potential dangers.

4 Power and Politics Power is essential to management. This session will explore how power and politics operate in organizations and how employees respond to it using scenes from the TV series Ugly Betty. It will also consider what happens when organisations achieve an extreme degree of power over their members.

5 Emotion Traditional accounts of organizational behaviour tend to emphasize rationality and de-emphasize emotion. This session will redress this imbalance by introducing key concepts including emotional labour and toxic emotion.
6 Bureaucracy and Globalisation Some commentators have suggested bureaucracy is a dysfunctional organizational design that results in immoral actions perpetrated by managers who have developed bureaucratic personalities. We will also look at how bureaucracy is related to globalisation through McDonaldization and Disneyization, illustrated by scenes from films such as Mondovino.

7 Ethics and Organization Is it possible for an organisation to be ethical in a globalised, capitalist system? Society is increasingly asking managers to make sure that their organizations and their members behave ethically. Using films such as Wall Street and Capitalism: A Love Story to illustrate, this session we will ask: what is ethical behaviour in an organization and what has the economic crisis revealed about organizational ethics?

8 Management Fashions and the Business School How are ideas about management and organisational behaviour developed, and how do they become popular? What processes are involved in a theory becoming fashionable and what are managers searching for in a management guru? What is the role of the business school in the production and dissemination of organisational behaviour theories?

9 Rethinking Leadership Leadership is considered by many to be the key to effective management, yet leaders often tend to be seen as heroic individuals surrounded by loyal followers. This session questions this image and introduces alternative ways of thinking about leadership.

10 Organisational Learning Can organisations learn and remember? Or is learning only something that can be done by individuals? Learning is often assumed to be a good thing that benefits everyone in an organisation. This session will explore this assumption with a particular focus on critical approaches to knowledge and learning.
