ANS to Q3: One of the most valuable experiences of my undergraduate course was to work on my final year Integrated Airport Design Project with a big group. As a team, we worked together aiming to win the best design and presentation certificate from the North Thames Branch of The Institution of Structural Engineers. The responsibilities were split according to the strength of each team member.
Since the output of this project included individual submissions of design, team submission and presentation of an integrated solution, there was an occasion when we had a huge dispute within the group due to personal indifferences and demanding timelines. Each member was trying to pursue their own interests to the exclusion of others. The challenge of this project involved coming to an agreement where everyone could get what they wanted, reaching a mutually satisfactory agreement. It was important for us to not only establish mutual trust but also making sure that all of us were working together to come up with a compromise solution to suit everyoneas best interests.
To overcome the problem, my idea was to set up regular meetings to settle down individual problems. During the meeting with my group members I was able to negotiate and listen carefully to the arguments of the other parties and assess the logic of their reasoning. Moreover, I listed all the issues which were important to each side and identified the key issues in order for us to decide on a course of action and come to agreement. The meetings ended up to be very constructive and successful. Through collective effort and mutual support, the supervisor was greatly impressed with our report. The presentation was highly successful and the audiences thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
