Legalization of Marijuana

Marijuana should be legalized in the United States.

State changing substances have been used by people since they have been discovered. Caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol are all legal to people over the age of 21. Alcohol and nicotine (cigarettes) kill more people than marijuana. In a free society, we should have the right to choose whether we want to use marijuana or not. Tax revenues from marijuana sales could be put towards education and other government programs. Health care costs related to alcohol and nicotine are immense. If people were to use marijuana as a replacement to these drugs, then costs would drop and health insurance could decrease. Abuse of any drug is possible, but its higher when drugs are Illegaland harder to get. Prohibiting a drug adds costs and is ineffective. Research, education, and regulation are better solutions. Presidents have been set. Alcohol prohibition didnt work. Countries with legalized marijuana do not have issues with abuse. Marijuana is not addictive and you cannot overdose on it. Both alcohol and marijuana are central nervous system depressants. Since they both produce the same results, the form should not be an issue. If alcohol can be regulated and controlled, then so can marijuana use. Alcohol has no medicinal value; marijuana does.

Possible Rebuttal: Abuse and long term health issues

The Argumentative Essay will have:
A title page (cover page)
An introduction
The body of your paper
A conclusion (that summarizes the content of your paper)
A reference page
Note: Again, be sure and use your course text, A Rulebook for Arguments, as a guide in preparing your paper.
Parenthetical citations and reference page: Be careful when using direct quotations, paraphrases or terms suggesting absolute facts or values, as these must be supported by parenthetical citations in the body of the paper, and an entry on the reference page.
You must use a minimum of five scholarly sources, with citations and references formatted in APA Manual style, which are recent (within 5 years).
A superior paper will demonstrate breadth and depth of knowledge and critical thinking appropriate for undergraduate-level scholarship. The paper must be free of typographical, spelling, and grammatical errors, with good sentence and paragraph structure.
